Global soil erosion destroys over 12 million acres of land each year. Nature slowly erodes itself. Human activities, such as construction clearance, greatly increase this process. The removal of vegetation exposes soil to the erosive forces of wind and water resulting in the loss of topsoil, mineral and nutrients. These losses result in costly cleanups and loss of land productivity. In the United States, The Environmental Protective Agency (EPA) has developed the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) to help reduce the costs and environmental impacts associated with erosion from construction sites. Erosion control blankets have been named a Best Management Practice by the EPA in helping reduce soil loss and establish new vegetation.
